Assignment 5

Students Prepare For Fast Approaching Winter

Students at North Dakota State University (NDSU) are no strangers to the winter season. While most students come from states that are notorious for the difficult season, many are not prepared for a Fargo winter.

Taylor Gasswint, sophomore, is a strategic communications major from Mankato, Minn. Coming from the midwest, Gasswint is used to the snow and cold, but is not a fan of this time of year.

“I don’t like how long it is. If it was just like a month or two it would be way more enjoyable… It’s too long, genuinely more than half a year is what it feels like.” Gasswint said.

Similar to Gasswint, Katilynn Herout, junior, is an English major from Minn. What they have in common, neither enjoy the Fargo winters.

“I am a pure summer girl, I love spending time in like 90 degree weather, so when it’s like negative 10 here I really hate it.” Said Herout.

Even though the season may not be their favorite, they can still find things they enjoy.

“My favorite winter activities would be snowboarding, and ice fishing. I don’t really fish but I pretend I fish.” Said Gasswint.

Camille Haman, freshman, is a strategic communications major from Pequot Lakes, Minn. She is preparing to endure her first Fargo winter.

“I am actually terrified for many reasons. One, even last year, walking from my car to my high school was really bad, and I hate the cold. I am terrified to be walking long distances.” Haman said.

While having to face the extremely cold temperatures walking to class, preparing to deal with the difficulties of owning a car in Fargo is also a concern for many students.

“My car doesn’t have winter tires so I kind of slide around a lot. I shake every time, I don’t know how many accidents I’ve almost gotten in, one being on the freeway.” Herout said.

As much as students may not be looking forward to the upcoming season, the holidays are a bright spot in the gloomy time.

“I only like winter until Christmas, and then after Christmas I really don’t like winter… After Christmas I feel like the snow just gets muddy and gross.” Said Haman.

Comments

  1. 1. Headline is definitely on the right track, but needs to be a tad shorter. I would recommend "Students Prepare for Winter" or something similar.
    2. You don't need to put NDSU in parentheses. Just use NDSU only after first reference. (Line 1)
    3. Minn. should be spelled out. AP Style. (Line 4)
    4. midwest should be capitalized (L3)
    5. , after like (L6)
    6. replace , with is that (L7)
    7. Should always be (insert person here) said, not said (insert person here).
    8. Strong storytelling!
You did a good job on Assignment 5 Josie. Make sure to put a , instead of a period in the case I highlighted in my comments above. Otherwise, well done.
