Assignment 8

  1. I believe it is okay for the school’s account to tweet about these incidents, as long as they are made public. I would be wary about posting things that could cause someone to be embarrassed though, as I would be drawing attention to someone by tweeting about the incident. I would not have a problem tweeting the majority of incidents, because they would be public record, but I would have to think harder about posting something that can hurt someone else. They could even check with the students that are involved before posting.

  1. I think in this situation it is completely fine to cite her source anonymously. This is a situation where the person she interviewed is not comfortable with his name attached to the story, and I think that is important to respect. Because of the content that the story focuses on, I think it is understandable that people would not want to be connected to a topic as difficult as documentation status. One thing she could do is attach a statement that clarifies she talked to real students, but they requested to remain anonymous.

  1. This is a difficult problem because I believe that a student newspaper should be able to speak about their administrators, but this becomes difficult when the article is speaking negatively. In this situation I would probably choose to not include the comments made about the dean, as they did not have to do directly with the point of the story. I think you can keep authenticity to what the speaker said while not including the specific comments made that paint the university and an administrator in a bad light.

    4. I think in this situation you have to keep the name attached to the article. There are millions of stories written that paint someone in a negative light or connect them to something bad. We can’t go back and erase people from their actions. I believe that they have to keep his name attached because if you take the name away from one person, how can you not do the same for anyone else that is in a similar situation. We live in a time where technology is everywhere and once something is put out into the internet it never truly goes away.
